Master Your Budget in Malaysia

The complete 2026 guide to the cost of living for Francophone expatriates: from luxury housing to street food delights.

Why is Malaysia Unbeatable in 2026?

Moving to Malaysia means choosing a rare balance between infrastructural modernity and tropical ease of living. Unlike Singapore, which has become prohibitive for many, or Bali, which suffers from saturation, Malaysia still offers exceptional value for money for Francophones.

In 2026, despite global inflation, the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) remains an advantageous currency for those earning in Euros or Swiss Francs. But beware, the "cost of living" is a subjective notion that depends heavily on your neighborhood and consumption habits.

"I have lived in Kuala Lumpur for 5 years now. At first, I thought I'd spend €1,000 per month, but I quickly realized that with €2,000, you live here like royalty compared to Paris. My apartment with an infinity pool and gym costs me less than a studio in Lyon."

In Malaysia, the electricity bill is often your biggest expense after rent, due to air conditioning. The tropical climate requires intensive use if you cannot stand the humidity. A monthly bill for a 100m² apartment can vary from 150 RM (moderate use) to over 500 RM (intensive use).

  • Internet (Fiber)

Expect around 100 to 200 RM per month for 100Mbps or 500Mbps (TM UniFi or Time Internet).

  • Mobile Telephony

Unlimited 5G plans are very affordable, around 40 to 60 RM/month with Maxis or CelcomDigi.

Shopping Mall Malaysia

The shopping paradox

Malaysia is a paradise of shopping malls. You will find everything from luxury brands to affordable labels like Uniqlo or H&M. Note that electronics are often the same price as in Europe, but services (hairdresser, manicure, massage) are much cheaper.

Alcohol: High Taxation

Plan your budget! Malaysia has one of the highest alcohol taxes in Asia. A beer on a terrace often costs more than a full meal.

Men's haircut: 25-50 RM. One-hour massage: 60-120 RM. Take advantage of it; it's an affordable luxury here.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can you live in Malaysia on €1,000 per month?

Yes, it is entirely possible, especially if you live alone outside of the ultra-modern center of KL or in Ipoh. You will eat local and live in decent housing but without frills.

What is the budget for a family with 2 children?

The determining factor will be international school. Plan between €3,500 and €5,000 per month to maintain a high standard including private tuition fees. See our Education page.

Is the price of petrol really that low?

Yes, the Malaysian government subsidizes RON95 petrol, which keeps it around 2.05 RM/liter (about €0.40). It is one of the lowest prices in the world.

Is it necessary to have health insurance?

Absolutely. Although care is cheaper than in Europe, hospitalization in a private clinic can quickly become expensive. Good insurance is mandatory for peace of mind. Consult our insurance guide.

How much does a dinner at a restaurant cost?

In a "Mamak" (local Indian-Muslim restaurant), a meal costs between 8 and 15 RM. In a shopping mall restaurant, expect 40-70 RM. In a gastro-pub or fine restaurant, expect 150 RM+ per person.

Do prices include taxes?

In restaurants, you will often see prices displayed with "++". This means you must add a 6% service tax (SST) and often a 10% service charge.

What is the cost of a work visa?

Fees vary according to the type of Employment Pass (EP). They are generally covered by the employer. For more details, visit our Visa section.

Should you leave tips?

Tipping is not expected as the 10% service charge is often included, but leaving a few Ringgits for good service is always appreciated.
