Why is insurance the pillar of your project in 2026?
Expatriation to Malaysia offers an exceptional lifestyle, blending urban dynamism with lush nature. However, settling on the other side of the world involves rigorous risk management. In 2026, with the evolution of visa regulations such as the PVT or MM2H, having robust coverage is no longer an option—it is a legal and moral necessity for you and your family.
The Malaysian health system is of excellent quality, but costs in the private sector, preferred by expats, can skyrocket quickly. Likewise, local driving conditions and the specificities of the real estate market require adapted guarantees that standard "travel" contracts do not cover.
"The classic mistake is thinking that your bank card insurance is enough. For a long-term expatriation, you need sustainable guarantees and local support."

International Health Insurance
Unlike travel insurance limited to 90 days, international health insurance for expats covers your routine care, major hospitalizations, maternity, and optical/dental. It is valid in Malaysia, in your home country, and when traveling anywhere in the world. Discover comparisons on Santexpat to find the best value for money.

Housing & Liability
Protect your home against fire, water damage (frequent during the rainy season), and theft. Personal Liability insurance is included to cover you against damage caused to third parties.
Auto / Motorcycle Insurance
In Malaysia, third-party insurance is mandatory to obtain your "Road Tax". For expats, we strongly recommend "Comprehensive" coverage including the "Special Perils" option against floods.
Life & Disability
Ensure your income is maintained in the event of a work stoppage or disability. Multi-currency life insurance also allows you to prepare for your financial future by capitalising in a stable currency.

Choosing your insurance:
5 points to watch
Price should never be the only criterion. In Malaysia, certain subtleties can make a contract useless when you need it most.
Reimbursement Caps
A heart operation or a road accident in Malaysia can cost more than €50,000. Check that your global annual cap is at least €500,000 (or unlimited).
Pre-existing Conditions
Most contracts exclude medical conditions existing prior to signing. Be transparent when applying to avoid a refusal of coverage later.
Direct Billing Network
In the event of hospitalization, the insurance must be able to pay the hospital directly (Gleneagles, Prince Court, etc.). Avoid insurers who ask you to advance the funds.
"Special Perils" Coverage for Auto
Sudden floods are common in Malaysia. Without the "Special Perils" option in your auto contract, water-related damage will not be covered.
Renewal Clause
Make sure your contract is "whole life" or "guaranteed renewable," so that the insurer cannot terminate your contract if you become seriously ill.
Expat Testimonials
"After my scooter accident in Langkawi, I realized the importance of good insurance. The coverage was immediate, and I didn't have to pay anything at the private hospital in KL."

"We opted for the CFE top-up to keep a foot in the French system. It's the ideal compromise for our family with three children in school here."

Insurance FAQ
What is the difference between "1st Euro" and "CFE Top-up"? +
Is health insurance mandatory for the MM2H visa? +
Yes, for most long-term visas (MM2H, PVIP, certain work permits), valid local or international health insurance in Malaysia is required during application and renewal.
Can I drive in Malaysia with my French insurance? +
No. Auto insurance must be taken out locally in Malaysia for the vehicle you use. Remember to check the rules on our dedicated driving page.
How does medical repatriation work? +
If local infrastructure does not allow for adequate treatment, the assistance organizes your medical transport to the nearest hospital center or to your home country. This is a crucial guarantee included in expat contracts.
Are dental fees covered? +
This is generally an option. Emergency care is often included in the basic module, but orthodontics or prosthetics require an extension of coverage, often with a waiting period of 6 to 10 months.
